NOSYMMETRIES / SYMPOSIUM

Friday 18 October 2024

NOSYMMETRIES is a project mounted by Idensitat within the framework of the European Care Ecologies (https://careecologies.eu) initiative. The project encourages research into and the launch of artistic processes connected with issues to do with various forms of social inequality. Through a residency, exhibition and seminar, the aim is to explore the idea of critical imagination and social creativity, with the connection between these two concepts seen as a collective process that encompasses a range of perspectives. Dissidences, disputes, violence, participation, construction of the commons, visibility/invisibility, care and social justice are some of the terms that have resonated during the residences and which are present in the exhibition and further expanded on and enriched thanks to the symposium.

The symposium is structured around conversations with invited guests and the presentation of brief lectures selected from those submitted in response to an open call for papers. The conversations will feature the participants Basha Changue and Tjasa Kancler; Valia Papastamou (Centre of New Media and Feminist Public Practices); Lucía Egaña and Giuliana Racco; Claudia Rodríguez and iki yos piña narváez funes; and Linda Porn, Vera Rodríguez, Cacao Diaz and Andrea Corrales.

The symposium draws together different viewpoints that question artistic and cultural practices connected with terms such as social justice and the ecology of care. A programme shaped by various voices, as a result of which the morning will be given over to the working group involving Idensitat and the IMARTE research group from the University of Barcelona, and the afternoon to the curatorial panel consisting of Irati Irulegi, from Idensitat, and Xeito Fole, Andrea Corrales and iki yos piña narváez funes.

Accessibility in the space

The Centre d’Art La Capella has two exhibition rooms: Espai Capella and Espai Rampa, both of which are located on the building’s ground floor. The centre has a single entrance from Carrer Hospital 56, which also acts as the exit. Occasionally, for example during openings, another exit is provided via a ramp that leads to the Rubió i Lluch gardens. Espai Capella is accessed from the centre’s reception area and Espai Rampa via a vestibule attached to Espai Capella. The entire route is accessible.

Espai Capella is housed in the nave of the former chapel of Hospital de la Santa Creu. It is a long spacious room with stone walls covered by a barrel vault with a few openings that have currently been darkened. Artificial light is provided by fluorescent lamps and/or spotlights mounted on rails at a height of five metres. The hall does not have a sound system, but is specifically provided with one for each occasion.

Espai Rampa is accessed via an accessible ramp. It is a spacious room with three large windows overlooking the Rubió i Lluch gardens. Artificial light is provided by fluorescent lamps and spotlights mounted on rails. The room does not have a sound system.

The toilets can be found on the same floor, with a bathroom that is accessible to people with reduced mobility.
