Brassaï in the MACBA collection

The Hungarian-born artist known as Brassaï photographed and catalogued a great deal of graffiti on the streets of Paris between 1930 and 1950. Linked to the Surrealist movement, he associated these images with the world of dreams and was fascinated by them as others were by African masks or all those creations that could be associated with primitivism or non-academic art. They reminded him of prehistoric cave paintings, to which we cannot provide a precise explanation, but to which a mystical and magical meaning is often attributed.
