Triple mortal. The precariousness as a subsistence strategy
Triple mortal is the leap that must be made to evolve from the protection of the classroom to the reality of the workplace, which implies an exciting yet dizzying challenge. Triple refers to the coming together of three public educational institutions dedicated to teaching the arts in the city of Barcelona: the Faculty of Fine Arts, the Escola Massana and the Escola Llotja. Mortal is the situation faced by many students once their academic studies have come to an end and they find themselves staring into the abyss of uncertainty, as well as the critical state facing teaching today.
A sum total of 21 pieces, spanning from the visual arts, to graphic design, to industrial design and crafts, comprise an exhibition that sets the background for deliberating over precariousness from a positive yet critical point of view.
Each of the projects features the use of recycled or low-cost materials and tools available to creators in order to resolve or point out the issues that affect them. Moreover, the proposals take the critical state of the political and economic climate faced by today’s society into account, and take an interest in the experiences closest to home.
Attention must also be drawn to collective work, tangible in many of the proposals, which facilitates the sharing of physical and material costs, and broadens and pluralises the perspective of each of the group members in order to accomplish common goals.
Finally, all the projects manifest the capacity to generate subsistence strategies and, therefore, to seek out ways to tackle the situation in which we are immersed.
Triple mortal shall be complemented by various parallel activities and a seminar of round tables, to be held at Fabra i Coats on 18 March, which will delve into the current state of educational establishments and the works presented in this exhibition.
